For those of you who don't know, there is a better way to cut felt than pinning patterns or attempting to trace patterns using a marker. Seriously, if you don't know this secret it will change your felt cutting life forever! And hey, you can even use this technique for fabric. I cut the entire alphabet both upper case and lover case letters in the time it takes to watch an episode of So You Think You Can Dance. That included tracing too peeps. So, what's the secret? Freezer Paper! I am in love with this stuff. I keep a roll downstairs to use for Cindy's crafts and painting projects and a roll in my craft room. Love it.
All you have to do is trace your pattern, picture, whatever you want to cut onto the paper. You can even free hand your own pattern right on there.
Iron it onto the felt until it stays. Iron the shiny end onto the felt, the papery feeling side should be on top.
Cut around your pattern and then peel off the freezer paper using plain scissors.
Yup seriously that easy! Before you know it, you will be on a roll cutting like a maniac.
And now that you know the secret to cutting felt just doesn't seem all that bad anymore does it? Put away the pins and the markers and go get some freezer paper. Be sure to stay tuned because I have some fun felt patterns coming your way.

ReplyDeleteYou can also put freezer paper in your printer(make sure the pattern is mirrored if necessary) then iron it on your felt and cut. It's also handy for embroidery patterns.

Deleteyou can further make stencils from freezer paper, iron onto your fabric of course and then use fabric paint to paint on your design, peel away your freezer paper & heat set your paint!

ReplyDeleteFreezer paper is similar to wax paper and parchment except it is used to keep meats freezer safe. The paper difference is that the bottom side has this plastic coat that melts onto fabric and the top side is paper. You can find it at any grocery store.

ReplyDeleteI learned something like this when I was using wonder under to adhear to felt to fabric/other felt (of course I learned it backwards by cutting a template, tracing it on my felt, cutting my felt, ironing it to the wonder under and the realizing I could have saved half the steps by starting with the wonder under!!!!). Great tip, I'll use it next time I don't need the wonder under on the back :)
ReplyDeleteJust to verify about the freezer paper: The shiny side which is what appears to have a plastic coating is what goes next to the felt. Is that correct? Wouldn't you have a mess on your iron if your iron touched the shiny side?
ReplyDeleteYes that is correct. It rarely happens that I get the shiny side on my iron and it wipes off pretty easily.
DeleteAnother great thing about this trick is that you can iron the patterns onto the felt a few times. So if you are making quanities you only have to make one pattern. I love this idea!!!!!!!

ReplyDeleteWe have "sandwich paper" here in New Zealand that has a paper real one side and a shiny side on the other. You can't use it in the oven as it burns - would this be similar to your freezer paper?
ReplyDeleteHi Kelly! That sounds like freezer paper but it is definitely worth trying. Use a test piece of felt to iron it on [the paper side on top]. Freezer paper can be used for sandwiches but not in the oven, that's parchment paper.

DeleteSpotlight stores have freezer paper on the roll. It's about $1.50 a metre. It's supposed to be at the dressmaking counter.
I also found a place in Mount Waverley, VIC, that sells freezer paper sheets. They go through the printer beautifully. Just don't know if I can post the name here but let me know if you need it. They are an online store only and freight is very reasonable. Ordered my sheets, plus some other stuff, last Friday (Nov 21) and received the order on Monday. Can't get much better than that.
