Remeber the ABC tote that I recently made? Well, I am not a fan of raw edges so I decided to sew a lining into it. I think it just looks so much nicer this way.
This will be an extension of the Tote Tutorial. Along with cutting out two squares of canvas, you will also cut identical squares for the lining. I had tons of this orange so I used this and I really like how it looks with this fun kiddy tote. If you want to add pockets, now is the time to do so.
Sew down and around the back following the arrows leaving a small opening at the bottom.
Just like in the regular tote tutorial, you will pinch the corners like so, measure how deep you want your bag to be, and make a mark from the point. This is an inch and a half from the point. Sew down the line and trim the excess. Repeat on the other side.
When you turn the lining right side out it should be boxed on the bottom like so. Now turn it back inside out...
Your canvas should be right side out [left] and the lining should be inside out [right].
Tuck the canvas into the lining.
Match up the side seams and pin it together. You are going to sew the two pieces together along the top edge.
Then, pull the canvas part out through the hole in the lining.
Once you have pulled it all the way out, it should look like this.
You can use a blind stitch to close the hole in the lining but I am lazy and I just sew it shut with the machine.
Tuck the lining into the bag, iron it down, and top stitch the top of the bag.
Finish off the tote by adding straps and you are finished! Now you have a lined tote.
This a great tutorial on sewing a lining as well as adding a gusset to the bottom of a bag. I love how the pictures tell the story! ReplyDeleteYou see the pockets to the right side of the lining. So sew the pockets on, face the two pieces right sides together and sew down the sides and bottom. Hope that makes sense.
ReplyDeleteQuestion, you said the bag was already made but you said to add handles at the end. Doesn't quite make sense. how did you sew through the handles?
ReplyDeleteYou can sew the handles onto the outside of the bag before sewing on the lining it's really a look preference. I like it when you can see the handle on the outside of the bag so after the bag and lining are sewn together I sew the handles right onto both the bag and lining as you can see in the first picture of the tutorial.
